What is Giving Hearts a Hand? PDF Print E-mail

Giving Hearts a Hand(GHH) is a nonprofit organization that has a mission to inform local communities about heart conditions in young athletes, while funding cardiac screenings that will create awareness and potentially save lives.

Giving Hearts a Hand has attained 501(c)(3) status through the Internal Revenue Service, and is classified as a public charity under code 170(b)(1)(A)(vi).

Since the organization began funding screenings in the summer of 2012, approximately 80 student athletes from Whiteland, Franklin, and South Ripley High Schools have been tested. GHH hopes that participation in the screening programs that have been implemented at Franklin, Greenwood, Whiteland, and South Ripley will increase as awareness of undetected cardiac conditions becomes more prevalent.

Doug and Cortney Meyer founded the organization in the spring of 2011 after hearing about numerous young athletes succumbing to Sudden Cardiac Arrest while participating in the sports they love. Having a personal connection with heart disease and love of sports, Doug felt led to make a difference in young athletes' lives.

As a high school sophomore, Doug was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that causes stress on the heart due to thickening of the tissue of the heart muscle. Under the watchful eye of some fantastic medical professionals, Doug has led a normal, active life through medication and close observation of the condition. GHH hopes to help prevent tragic situations from occurring in young athletes through raising awareness of symptoms and treatments of often undetected heart conditions.

Doug and Cortney currently reside in Greenwood, Indiana, where they have lived since 2001. They have two children and are also members of Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church in Greenwood, Indiana.
